Fotograf Alireza Husseini i samtale med forfatter og filmregissør Nina Grünfeld om prosjektet I Was There.

I prosjektet I Was There sammenstiller Alireza Husseini historiske bilder fra andre verdenskrig med egne bilder av de samme stedene i dag. Prosjektet er et resultat av reiser og research over flere år. Husseini har reist til flere land i Europa og Asia for å oppsøke stedene der de historiske arkivfotografiene opprinnelig ble tatt.

Hva betyr det å si I Was There? Med tittelen inviterer Alireza Husseini publikum til å reflektere over sammenhengen mellom fortidens handlinger og dagens samfunn, og hvordan valgene vi tar i dag vil prege fremtiden. Husseini ønsker å advare mot fascistisk identitetstenkning og gjentakelse av historien.

For Husseini har prosjektet en personlig dimensjon. Han har selv vært flyktning fra Afghanistan og aldri hatt muligheten til å stemme i et demokratisk valg. Slik sett handler utstillingen også om tilhørighet, ansvar og demokratiske verdier.

I samtalen med Nina Grünfeld vil Husseini snakke om sine reiser, kunstnerskap og metode, samt det å knytte personlig erfaring til større historiske og politiske spørsmål.

Arrangementet foregår på engelsk. Gratis inngang.

Biografier

Nina Grünfeld er filmskaper, forfatter og foredragsholder, og hun er professor og prodekan for kunstnerisk utviklingsarbeid og forskning ved Høgskolen Innlandet. Hun er kjent for de personlige dokumentarfilmene Ukjent opphav, Den døende doktoren og Ninas barn. I 2015 ga hun og Espen Holm ut boken Ninas barn om det jødiske barnehjemmet i Oslo under 2. verdenskrig. For tiden arbeider Nina Grünfeld med en filmatisering av restitusjonsprosessen som fant sted på 1990-tallet da den norske stat vurderte mulighetene for tilbakeføring av de materielle verdiene som ble fraranet jødene under krigen. Filmen er basert på en memoar av Berit Reisel.

Alireza Husseini (f. 1990) er født i Afghanistan og vokst opp i Iran. Husseini har siden 2012 vært yrkesfotograf. I Was There har vært stilt ut flere steder siden 2018, blant annet Iran, Canada og Bulgaria – og senest ved Galerie Bohai i Hannover i 2024 og Helmut Space i Leipzig i 2025. I 2021 fullførte han fotografistudier ved Multi Media Berufsbildende Schulen i Tyskland.

Photographer Alireza Husseini in conversation with author and film director Nina Grünfeld about the project I Was There.

In I Was There, Alireza Husseini juxtaposes historical photographs from the Second World War with his own contemporary images of the same locations today. The project is the result of years of travel and research. Husseini has journeyed to several countries in Europe and Asia to seek out the sites where the original archival photographs were taken.

What does it mean to say I Was There? With this title, Husseini invites the audience to reflect on the relationship between past actions and today’s society, and on how the choices we make now will shape the future. Through the project, Husseini seeks to warn against fascist identity thinking and the repetition of history.

For Husseini, the project also has a personal dimension. He himself was a refugee from Afghanistan and has never had the opportunity to vote in a democratic election. In this sense, the exhibition also addresses questions of belonging, responsibility, and democracy.

In conversation with Nina Grünfeld, Husseini will speak about his travels, artistic practice, and methods, as well as what it means to connect personal experience to broader historical and political issues.

The event will be held in English. Free admission.

Biographies

Nina Grünfeld is a filmmaker, author, and lecturer, and Professor in artistic research and development at Høgskolen Innlandet. She is known for her personal documentary films and in 2015, together with Espen Holm, she published the book Ninas Barn (“Nina’s Children”) about the Jewish orphanage in Oslo during the Second World War. At present, Nina Grünfeld is working on a film about the restitution process that took place in the 1990s, when the Norwegian state examined the possibilities for returning the material assets that had been confiscated from Jews during the war. The film is based on a memoir by Berit Reisel.

Alireza Husseini (b. 1990) was born in Afghanistan and grew up in Iran. He has worked as a professional photographer since 2012. I Was There has been exhibited at several venues since 2018, including in Iran, Canada, and Bulgaria, and most recently at Galerie Bohai in Hanover in 2024 and Helmut Space in Leipzig in 2025. In 2021, he completed photography studies at Multi Media Berufsbildende Schulen in Germany.
